Link Strategy

Link Building

Link building is by far the most discussed and argued about subject within SEO
The lines are clearly drawn between on-page SEO (content, validation, keywords) and off-page SEO (links) camps.
Both sides are right, when done correctly but a structured combination of the two makes for an awesome SEO strategy.

I meet many websites owner who say “links I still can’t get my head around how that works!” So I will attempt to explain. To do this I will describe all the different types of links available and give them a score out of ten.

Like money the best links are earned, to earn a link is a result of being an authority on your subject so much so that you are quoted, have articles published on other websites, your newsletter articles are heavily “liked” “re-tweeted” etc. Your content (with links back to you) has legs and is able to spread your word under is own energy.

Of course this is not a simple thing to achieve and requires it own strategy to get to that position. The people who gain that type of status are those who can solve a problem and are willing to share that information. If you are a project manager just using the internet to advertise that fact is not enough you have to write about “how to get the best out of a project manager” “things you should look for when hiring a project manager” (which is content) a simple ad saying hiring me is not going to get any traction.

Article Exchange

Article exchange like the above except that you have to hawk you efforts around and perhaps offer an exchange posting spot on your site, you meet a counterpart at networking meeting you should suggest an exchange, don’t worry about them being in competition with you, as long as you get your work out there more than they do you will always be ahead of the game. The article needs to be at least 300 words. Includes a keyword rich heading, sub heading and the keyword/keyword phrase appears in the first paragraph. Easy to read, relevant and links back to you.

Self promotion of Articles.

Write articles that you can Google+, tweet, etc that other people might pass on. I write SEO tips and tricks, I never say that I can do SEO work for you, who cares, I want to help people solve problems for free so that one day they might hire me to solve a huge amount of problems in one go (did I say that out loud). You want to get followers get enough followers and some of them are bound to re-tweet your stuff and you get yet more followers. Every journey starts with a single step.

Internal Links

Okay so this falls squarely in the on-page SEO camp but the anchor text (the words in the link) in your internal links is hugely important. One of the first things I would change on a website is their menu buttons, especialy the “Services” button. That is a wasted SEO opportunity “DOG GROOMING SERVICES” is much better, only for dog grooming sites of course. Internal links can be implemented with the text ie. to see a full range of our product see our Dog Grooming Services (< that would be a link, however we don’t have a dog grooming services page to link too, yet).
Of course you are limited to how many internal links you can justifiably have.

Link from a relevant site in your market sector.
In the early days of the internet, when everything was simple, a link looked like this unlimited web hosting Your keywords or in many case your website name wit in an anchor/link to your site.

Behind the scenes (the html code)  it looked like this <a  href=””>unlimited web hosting</a>

a = anchor

href  = hypertext/hyperlink/html Reference  (the true meaning of the h has been lost in the mists of time)

The text inside the opening  <a  href=”” > unlimited web hosting   </a>   and closing tag,  should be the keywords that you want to rank for.

If you could get these on other sites, enabling search engines to access your site via as many other portal/sites as possible that was what you got your ranking from. A simple popularity test, the more people that knew you the better. Later the relevance of the two sites was taken into consideration.  I would give that type of list a generous

leaving a original link from any site that would take it a

Okay you may conclude that I have added to many zeros to that last score. 1 maybe 2 but that should not change the gist of my point.

Yet there are many many people actively pursuing this type of link. Believing the volume will win through.

Like having an article published. the better the authority of the publisher the more prestige you get.

What is link building and why does it matter?  Search engines see relevant links to and from your site as a votes system, or  a peer to peer review of your college dissertation.  This is an effective way of defining the internet’s opinion of what’s important and legitimate – the more “reviews”, the better.  Authority models, if you like.

You have two choices here.  Choice One: correct link building  will involve considerable time and effort.  Choice Two: mass link building can be quick but expensive.  We think there’s only one way to do it: the correct way.  Working with sector related websites to exchange articles, for example is a great way to raise your site’s visibility in the longer term, but it takes time.

Fewer, relevant links are more effective than lots of irrelevant ones.

Do links work at all?

Take a look at our graphic here from Google Webmaster tools.   Notice where “links to your site” sits in the hierarchy and how it appears in the traffic section.  Still quite important, then.

Off-page SEO

Just as everything that appears on your site must be formatted correctly, the way that your links and articles appear away from your web pages is vital, too. The crucial part being the actual link or links with the acticle!
