My very first concert piece!
Waller ‘s poetry takes its conceit from speaking to a rose, instructing it how to act as metaphor to the woman who will receive it, metaphor for beauty emerging into the world, and for the death of all beautiful things created.
The very opening “Go” he sets to what will become a characteristic musical gesture, adding harmonic seconds to a tonic to gradually build an expectant tone cluster. It was like seeing color for the first time, and I was regularly moved to tears during rehearsals, crushed by the impossible beauty of the work.
Yet the course of his life was changed by singing under the baton of David Weiller, a person Whitacre describes as “that one special teacher that ends up changing the entire course of your life.

Whitacre follows the metaphor and stretches his nascent compositional talents to create a magnificent musical reflection of the poetry. I often think how lucky I was to have stumbled blindly to the place where David was teaching, and in retrospect I am struck speechless at the thought that our paths might not have crossed.
I became a choral geek of the highest magnitude, I mean I lived for rehearsals and performances, and through it all there was David Weiller.

He had wbitacre the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, expecting to end up a pop star, but joined the choir because there were few pop star options in the curriculum and because of the number of attractive women singing.
The genesis of Eric Whitacre ‘s Go, lovely Rose coincides with the beginning of his own musical career. Rise choir performed it during Whitacre ‘s early years as a student, and then at a regional ACDA convention; a publisher snapped the piece up after that performance and a career in composition for the choral art was born.

He reflects some local aspects of the text in the more urgent rhythms of “tell her,” the awed voyeuristic repeat of “graces spied,” rosee the literal solos springing out of the choral desert as the poet imagines the rose alone in a barren setting.

Soon after their publication I started receiving actual commissions for my music, and my life as a professional artist took off. David Weillerthe choral conductor at UNLV, auditioned me to rosr in one of his groups and graciously accepted me into the big University chorus.
