The story is told with a dark humor as if the situation is so pathetic it is funny. A Nazi horse butcher is married to the exhibitionist. It meant German workers were paid twice a day with a break in the morning so they could rush out with suitcases or wheelbarrows full of cash and femarque to buy a loaf of bread or anot.
Stefan Zweig’s story Die unsichtbare Sammlung provided me with a glimpse of those unquiet waters, but Der schwarze Obelisk pushed me into the breakers, whence I now emerge snorting and dripping and shaking my head in wonder. I thought this book would be more about Hitler and I was waiting for it all along, because I would definitely enjoy it in his style of writing.
Remarque’s alter ego, Ludwig, oscillating between cynicism and idealism, is suspended in a state between child- and adulthood, a fact of bladk he is sometimes aware, which he mulls over again and again, along with the recurring motifs of identity and values – a commonplace among the young and unformed, but here pressurized by a most extraordinary situation.
You had to be crazy, you had to be different, you had to be unusual in order to bear the terror and the brutality.
Starting to read Remarque was probably one of the best decisions I have had lately. The writing is remmarque, the philosophy is fantastic, and the characters are unique and delightful.
I questioned my own beliefs, I looked at my own morals, I changed my perspective towards love and war and sanity.

It just seemed to meander through various happenings and locations while never quite getting to a point. A self-professed poet, Ludwig soon senses a growing change in his fatherland, a brutality brought upon it by inflation.
